Baltic Amber Inclusions - 'Life' in Amber
The sap flowing from trees was a deadly trap for animals living in and visiting the Eocene forest. Flying insects sat on drops of the oozing sap. The less mobile inhabitants of the forest were caught by the flow of the stream. Plants could be entrapped by drops of sap falling to the ground, while jumping animals would step or fall into sap puddles.
The creatures which remain trapped in chunks of amber are called inclusions, preserved for 40 million years.
Modern insects are not likely inclusions in Amber. It has been reported that some amber is bored and insects 'introduced', then the hole filled with resin of the same colour. Most of the insects embalmed in amber are extinct species. If the embalmed inclusion in the resin is from an extinct species or one found in nature, the resin is most likely copal and not amber.
For centuries Amber was only worn by nobility and not affordable to the masses. Some cultures use amber for healing properties and are used in medicine. Even today it is thought that wearing amber jewellery will instil confidence in the wearer, balance a person’s mood, and lessen depression and anxiety.
